This coursework is for thoughtful classroom and education-adjacent leaders who put their children鈥檚 needs first, always thinking about respect and inclusivity. You鈥檒l learn about disability law and educational policy, giving you a solid foundation to build upon as you study best practices in working with children with disabilities.

The Special Education minor is a perfect fit for fields outside education, including social work, psychology, occupational and physical therapy, and many other human services fields.

Benedictine Scholarship

All new first-year applicants to St. Scholastica will be awarded either the Benedictine Scholarship or the Access Award, upon admission to the College.

Financial Aid

Special education is a rewarding occupation and it鈥檚 also in demand. There is a nationwide shortage of special education teachers. The聽聽identifies special education as a licensure shortage聽area. Academic and behavioral strategist is the second most identified licensure area where a licensed teacher is needed.

According to the report, 鈥淭he districts identified the licensure areas with unfilled positions, and the three areas identified most were 鈥榮pecial education.鈥欌 A background in special education can support the early work of speech and language clinicians, school psychologists, occupational and physical therapists, social workers, and interventionists and advocates.
